TOP: It is VERY important that your quilt top is squared at 90 degree angles at corners and lays flat. If it is not, puckering or gathering can happen. Press your quilt top. DO NOT have any pins or embellishments on the quilt. EXCEPT... If your quilt is directional, put a LARGE safety pin indicating the top of the quilt. PLEASE INDICATE ON WORK ORDER FORM THAT YOU HAVE A SAFETY PIN IN FABRIC!!! Do not baste (sew or pin) your quilt; all layers must be separate.
BACKING: It is also VERY important that your backing be square at 90 degree angles at corners and lays flat. If you are piecing your backing, it should preferably be selvage to selvage (meaning selvage - factory edge - should be on top & bottom). Whenever possible, seams on backing should be 1/2" and pressed open. Be sure to remove the selvages at the seam BEFORE stitching together. This will eliminate selvage showing on your backing. If it is not possible to press the seam open, press in one direction only. DO NOT double stitch this seam, as it will cause it to stand up when quilting and will show a a bulge in your quilt. Backing fabric should be 8" longer and 8" wider than the quilt top, so that you have any 4" extra all the way around (ex.: if top is 62" x 74", the backing should be 70" x 82").
SPECIAL NOTE: When you press your quilt top and backing, wait until the fabric is cool to the touch before folding it and putting it away. This will eliminate setting creases and more importantly reduce the possibility of growing mold on your quilt.
Prior to working on any quilt, we will examine it to ensure that the fabric can be machine quilted. If it is determined that the quilt is frail, antique or needing repair (such as dropped seams, holes or gaps in fabric), we will contact you. Upon your request, we will assist you in fixing the dropped seams and gaps - if possible - at a minimum charge of $40.00 per hr. We will also assist you in finding a quilter who restores frail, damaged and/or antique quilts. We can not be responsible for unsatisfactory results if the quilt top or back has wavy borders, puckers, lose threads, is out of square, etc. For fastest turn around time, please ensure that your quilt meets the preparation requirements mentioned above.
If you enter your quilt in a public display, show, exhibit, or for judging, you must give credit to Coastal Quilting Plus.
